On Monday, we saw the release of an album called Binary from Vague Illusion and so I thought I’d give it a track-by-track review to give our fans an idea as to what they can expect from it.

First up, I listen to the intro and I can tell I’m going to be in for a roller-coaster ride as it builds very nicely into Truth. No time is wasted and we get plunged straight into an intense bassline which relaxes into a relatively calm breakdown before slinging you back out to the wilderness with authority.

Next on the hit-list, Deep Pacific. A haunting vocal starts off the track and features throughout as the drum beat and tempo picks up very nicely; the inclusion of some brilliant glitch work with the strong vocals making you feel empowered. Feel The Vibe begins with a more melodic approach and I definitely felt a bit reflective before the main drop took me to a higher state. The rasta-esque vocals adding another dimension to the track, a great touch as well. Hysteria begins with a sample from an Alfred Hitchcock film , “Strangers on a Train”, which sets the tone in this one from the start. It paints a picture of chaos and aggression in my mind and as the song progresses you feel your own intensity build up in this, it’s a very clever track.

Down in Flames starts off with a more melodic synth and bursts into life with powerful lyrics in the vocals “If it’s not good for me, it’s not good for you, if you say its ok, you’re a ******* fool”. Very strong message portrayed in this one I feel and the drum beat and melody fits perfectly with them. Then comes Opportunity, a song that featured on my AirLove LP back in June. I still very much like this track as the strings and the brass sounds that are featured throughout convey very positive vibes and I always find myself being uplifted by it.

Then finally comes Vague Illusion’s and my jaw dropped as I hear this for the first time and it’s my favourite of the album. The intense start leads you into a totally different world and, I believe, a more personal world. The bassline is like no other in the album and just takes you off from the start.

My final say is that this is such a cleverly worked album and will take you on an extreme journey, one which you will have to make sure you wear padded protection for!

Words from the man himself

I got a chance to speak to the man behind Binary to dive deeper into the release. Here’s what happened:

Ahoy there Vague! Top production released this week from you, I absolutely loved it! What was the inspiration behind Binary and what’s it all about?

Easy there Nicky! Thanks mate, well Binary is based on how technology has brought myself to meet new people really. Using technology helped me to meet you and TigerPaw. It’s also about what technology has helped me see worldwide as well.

That’s a brilliant concept! Speaking of concepts, this album heavily features strong bassline sounds, is there a reason for this?

That’s one extreme of my personality, I have got a mellow side but Binary deals with the opposite side of the calm spectrum.

Very interesting way to represent it and you pulled it off damn well! As I was listening to the album, I felt that you were telling a story and I would like to ask if there is a story behind that flows throughout the EP?

Yes there is a story of sorts behind each song really. The first three songs Truth, Deep Pacific and Feel the Vibe are about friendship, love and loyalty. Feel the Vibe is a track for my fellow producers and is more about music and the comradery with my friends on the record label. Hysteria is all about the bad things that I see in the world; war, murder. That’s why it is more aggressive than the other ones on there. Down In Flames tries to a convey a message of responsibility and that we all have to look after ourselves. Opportunity is about my close friends and how we have all grown together whether it’s in a short or a long space of time. Finally, Vague Illusion’s is about me personally. I’m not a spotlight person, I prefer being the guy in the background, observing life.

Vague Illusion

The main man behind the AirPlus Recordings website and one of the heavier drum & bass producers from South Africa has got a couple of releases coming our way but the first EP called “Binary”, with 8 monstrous drops including a couple of bonus tracks, is out on the 11th September!

We sent over our over eccentric public relations bloke Nicky Havey to probe Vague Illusion. And then he decided to ask him a few questions about how he got into music!

I hope you don’t feel to ravaged after the probing so let’s get down to it! First things first, what got you into making music?

I guess the main reason for me getting into creating music was that I wanted to find a way to better express myself. I do digital art and photography, which provided an outlet of sorts. However, I found I was better able to express the different facets of my personality by making music.

Oh yes, can totally relate to how music can be used to express oneself! Have you drawn any influence from the drum & bass genre specifically or is it all random?

I do draw some influence from a few drum & bass artists like: Chase and Status, Nu:Tone, Pendulum and Danny Byrd. Other then that it’s all pretty random, but being a pretty big metal head I have to admit a lot of my music does get influenced by these much heavier genres.

Well, I know I certainly can feel the heavier influences in your work! Moving on to more recent events (not the probing), you recently released an electro track on AirPlus Singles Volume 3. What made you decide to change it up from dnb?

I was mainly just experimenting and giving my mind a bit of a break from the 170bpm realm of things. I have some more Electro tracks coming up, but those I will leave for 2013.

Exciting times ahead! Ok looking back on your SoundCloud page, out of the songs you have uploaded to date, is there a personal favorite?

I would have to say my 2 favorite tracks so far are Bay Sunrise and Dusk Till Dawn. Both those tracks are pretty personal to me.

And they are truly special so readers of this article should definitely go and have a listen to them! In terms of working with other people, have you collaborated with anyone before and if so, did you enjoy the experience?

So far I have only really collaborated with TigerPaw on 2 tracks, but I have a few more collaborations coming up. However, the experience is awesome, it’s always nice to see how musical minds come together to create one track and still managing to put his/hers own personality into that track.

100% agree with you on that one! Would you look to collaborate with artists in the future or are you happy “Riding Solo”?

Most definitely would like to collaborate more in the future. Collaboration can be challenging but it’s a great way to expand your own musical horizons.

Blindstate

The minimal drum & bass magician has been eyeing up a couple of DJ gigs that he will be busy with on the 25th September and also in October with TigerPaw. His “End of the World”  album aims to make its way out before Christmas, which is looking pretty mouthwatering already and has also planned a free EP before then as well so we will be keeping you posted on that, stay focussed on the AirPlus Recordings Facebook page for more intel on that! Meanwhile, he has just uploaded to SoundCloud a little beauty called “Time Bombs”, the deep synths and bassline will leave you in a hypnotic state:

Davine Law

Our hard hitting dubstep artist has given us something quite special the past month when he dropped his 808 EP, which is a free download. It features the trademark heavy basslines that we’ve come to know and love and will leave you feeling like you’ve been on a heavy night out, without going on the the night out! Check it out here:

He is also diving into hip-hop genres and has recently pushed out a track that he’s worked on with Spex so expect an EP coming soon from these two along with a collaboration he is working on with joY.

Deb D

On to the angelic voice of Belfast’s beauty Deb D, who has definitely found her niche in singing on ambient chilled tracks with Jas0Kool and minimalistic techno with Pablo. The song we feature on the newsletter here is a very special one, dedicated to her cousin, with vocal harmonies from Deborah Ivri.

Deb D also is going to be working on an EP with Nicky Havey which will be based around hard work and reward featuring mainly chillout songs so something to look forward to in the future.

Nicky Havey

The running man, Nicky Havey, has pushed a couple of singles out since AirLove, one of which was featured on AirPlus Singles Volume 3 and the other is a reflection of how he is finding PhD life called Stuck In This Place, one of his heavier tracks featuring samples from “Dazed and Confused“.

There are other projects on the horizon though including an EP collaboration with Deb D focussing on the aspect of hard work and seeing a project through. Another EP concept is underway featuring vocals also from Deb and Mic+Girl and also currently working on songs to be featured in Vague Illusion‘s “1 = 2″ album coming out later this year so there’s plenty to come from the guy who runs marathon’s for fun!

TigerPaw

The founder of AirPlus has been a busy tiger! He has focused on his radio show Live at the TigerDen that brings the newest beats from artists in the record label and works in progresses. He also had a special guest at the previous show, bringing some top house tracks in an hour long set from King Mob. TigerPaw was also busy on the AirPlus promotion side, hosting a show with StepBit at an event hosted by Ear Piece Records so many thanks to them for doing that. TigerPaw has also been conjuring up some big collaborations, one of which with Rob G and Mic+Girl, showing us the lovely jazz touch he has with this peach:

Vague Illusion

The man behind the website is also the man behind the madness, or should that be madness behind the man? Vague Illusion has conjured up a real storm with the impending release of his 8 track EP Binary, containing some hard hitting drum & bass tracks that will be leaving you feeling ready to carry the party on. He is also currently working on another concept called “1 = 2″ which is a two sided EP, one side being light hearted and liquid, the other side plunges you in to the dark depths of your soul. This EP will also feature tracks on both sides from Nicky Havey and TigerPaw.

The prelude

One of AirPlus Recordings early signings was Run C.T. and he has amazed us with his brilliant songs throughout his time as a music producer with divine hip-hop beats, vocal chops and drum & bass vibes. He has a breathtaking LP coming out called “Natural Static” and we wanted to delve into the creative mind of Run C.T. so that you guys can find out more about the artist!

Nicky Havey caught up with him recently and this is how the interview went down:

Hey Run C.T., hope that it’s all going well your side! I’d just like to start things off by finding out how you first got into making music?

Well, I’ve been into music since I was a kid, I remember when I was really little how I would make random noises and it would end up becoming a rhythm! Mom always said I had a natural knack for music, but what REALLY set it off was when I started high school and one of my bros showed me this program called FL Studio. He sat me down and gave me the piano roll to play with. I had no idea what I was doing, but after a good 2 hours I came up with a 30 second beat and these guys were jamming to it! They said I should pursue this even further. At first I wasn’t really into it, but then after a good few months of sitting down and learning it, I took their advice and occasionally I would show people and they would give me the same answer of “you should go pro with this.” That’s when I really went deep into it, and ever since then I’ve been addicted to making music.

That’s really cool how you got into it, everyone has their own unique story! What would you say is your main inspiration for the music that you make now?

Well, I listen to a lot of genres, but from my background of old school soul, Motown and funk music, and the affinity of records, vinyl and everything that has a nostalgic feel to it, I really get inspiration from artists that use those tools to their advantage. Nujabes, as the most recent person I’ve heard and loved. Tribe Called Quest, and some real old school back to the temptations, and Jackson five! Sometimes I feel too young cuz I missed out on seeing them live.

Such is your talent that you now create music in a variety of genres BUT out of all of them, which is your favourite one to produce?

I’ve made trance, house, a bit of dubstep, Drum and Bass and recently I finally went back to the roots of my hip-hop culture and started really grinding down on the sampling style of hip-hop. So far that is my absolute favorite genre to work with. I love how anything can become a hip-hop beat and by utilizing resources that the world of music offers, we can create something new from an old style.

Absolutely! Ok, looking on the songs you’ve uploaded on to SoundCloud, your most played song is “Space Voyage” that you put up a while back, can you remember what made you write this and how that all came about?

I was heavily into synth work and the way I came up with it was that I wanted to give off an incredibly spacey vibe, so I sat in the lab and was playing around with bell sounds in FL Studio. I put some distortion on them and they popped out with space vibes. In my mind I was thinking, “YES!!! this the perfect bell!!!” so I went to work on it, I didn’t know how to create a lot of sounds by my own hands back then, so I used some FL presets to make the choir and synth FX and I began to string together one catchy melody with another until the song was done. I was actually shocked that it got so popular now that I look back on it, haha.

It’s funny how we can be surprised with what hits with our audience! Moving on to bandcamp now, you send a few songs off there, how did you come across this?

Well, besides the big releases I do with Airplus Recordings, I’ve always wanted to bring a more personal touch of music to people that are willing to listen. The songs in bandcamp are all hip-hop, some abstract and some with that vinyl style, but those songs really represent the man behind the music. It’s like each EP/LP is a part of a creative world I imagine and those also hold some emotions I can only write down in hip-hop format. So instead of just showing off beats, I would wrap them in a package and send them to bandcamp for download.

You definitely put a lot of care and attention in to what you send out to us! Let’s talk about your collaborations, as you have had a few with other artists. How have you found working with other people?

Oh man, lemme tell you. Working with other people is beyond awesome. To put it in the most nerd like sense possible, collabing in music is like using fusion in Dragon ball Z, hahaha. It’s literally fusing two personalities through music and forming one potentially amazing entity.

Hahaha! Loving the Dragon ball Z reference! So out of all the collabs that you have been involved with, which has been your favourite so far?

That’s a tough one man. I enjoyed working with the very talented emcees Biologic and AMPhibian, as well as other producers like Magic Nanna and Sky Sofa, and Areou. Of course I have to give props to Mr. TigerPaw for the two collabs we’ve done so far, and will continue to do so! Haha, honestly though the most intense collabs were with AMPhibian. He personified his poetry into other people’s music with so much precision and substance that I had to collab with him. He also shared similar ideals with me, which struck synergy between us.

I think all of us at AirPlus have a lot to thank Mr. TigerPaw for! Sounds like you have really enjoyed working with other people, a final question about the collabs and something for our fans to look forward to, who would you like to collaborate with in the future? Is there an artist out there who you’d love to work with or are you happy doing your own thing?

Well first off, I’d like to jump onto a collaboration with you Nick. I’m super curious about how we synergize in music terms. Other than that, I really wanna collab with about the whole Airplus team at least once, hopefully twice. I’d love to collab with AMPhibian and Biologic some more as well.

I’m sure we can arrange something very special for our listeners in time! Let’s talk about your new LP coming out, “Natural Static”. What is the motivation behind this one and can you tell us a little bit more about it?

Well Natural Static was basically an idea I had one sunny afternoon. I wanted to make a video game type world through music, and using 8-bit and chiptune, to make that happen was my intentional goal…what ended up happening was that I used tons of synth and ambient work along the 8-bit to create an airy, yet game like vibe, which worked out quite well. Natural Static emphasizes 8-bit quite a lot throughout the LP, as well as mellow, calm vibes. My goal for the LP was to make it sound like a giant video game and since I’m a hardcore gamer, it was pretty easy to bring that idea alive. Been a gamer since I could first hold a controller for Super Nintendo, so making catchy melodies was a must for this LP.

Well, as an ex-hardcore gamer myself I can totally relate to that and can safely say that I’ve been itching for this release for a while to get those gamer juices flowing back! The final question I have for you is about the future, what can we expect from you in the coming months once Natural Static is out the way?

Well, I’m already in the progress of making a two part LP called Sunlight. Ten tracks of sampled hip-hop on Side A, while ten tracks of sampled drum and bass are on side B, so that will hopefully bring a unique vibe to the table. Also my inner gamer is gonna work with a new Final Fantasy EP, called “A New Home” which will sample music from different Final Fantasy eras. And way down the road is another LP called Generations. I actually have a few songs on everything I listed, so I’m really prepared for bringing these out. Thanks man.

Well, what can we say that hasn’t already been said about the liquid dnb maestro that is JIKES?! His EP “Come fly with me”, out on the 13th, features some sublime sounds and beats that you won’t truly appreciate unless you hear it. He has described it as an incite in to his psyche and his major influences are London Elektricity, Maduk, Rameses B and Metrik. Here is a minimix that has been created by AirPlus’ head honcho TigerPaw:

Run C.T.

A quick update about the Natural Static LP from our man Run C.T.  He is currently about half way through the album and already has another concept for a separate LP called Sunlight, which will have two sides to to it. This will feature 10 hip-hop tracks that will the be sampled and transferred to drum & bass tracks so this sounds like it will be another dose of quality from the teen so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for that!

BLINDSTATE

Our minimal liquid dnb henchman, BLINDSTATE, is still applying those finishing touches to his LP, which aims to depict life in post-apocalyptic Earth, a very interesting concept and one that will really get you thinking!

Vague Illusion

The main man behind the beautiful creation of the new look AirPlus website, Vague Illusion, has changed the scene a little bit from the fast paced dnb sounds and switched over to making house, electro and club-esque music. His new song, With You, features on our AirPlus Singles Volume 3 as well because it is that good!

TigerPaw

The big cheese of AirPlus has got his fingers in many a pie at the moment. He has been working on the mini-mixes for AirLove, Come Fly With Me and has put together an incredible 38 minute long liquid dnb mix to get us all in the mood for summer featuring a load of quality songs to inspire you and here it is:

Deb D

Our angelic vocalist Deb D has been working on a few collaborations this past month, including current works in progress with TigerPaw, Nicky Havey and S Dot in all their separate forms. She has also made a song with Jas0Kool called ‘Love Again’ , with a personal message inside:

Hard as it may seem,
Life is hard,
But we have the power,
To make it better”.

The wannabe doctorate from the UK has been delighted with the response and support for the AirLove LP that came out on the 26th June. However, since then he has gone back to the drawing board and been trying new sounds, in fact branching into the chillout genre in some cases, finishing off remixes of Neon and e-un‘s tracks and managed to squeeze out a song for AirPlus Singles vol. 3. There has been talk about some big challenges next year for charity but more information on that to come in upcoming newsletters.

Gattica Kid

Our chilled ambient sound-scape genius Gattica Kid has been putting in the hard hours playing around with acoustic instruments and has had two songs put on to the Singles Volume 3, one of which, “In My Prayers” can be previewed below:

Further to this, he has also been working hard on a new song that will feature in his album, “Piano Forte“, that he is aiming to get out in November time, a year after his previous album. This album will be featuring “In My Prayers“ and “Eloquent Elude”

StepBit

This talented artist has had a busy July and it has shown as he has got a couple of brilliant songs featured on the AirPlus Volumes 3, I Am Not Real and Blue Sky, both featuring Mic+Girl. There will plenty more to come from our man from Oakland!

Davine Law

In his own words, he has got a lot going on right now and here is why! Our heavy beats artist is working on a promotion site where he is making another EP for his “Steppin On Dub” page and the EP that is dedicated to his son is still in the works. He is also currently working on a remix for Stepbit and has a load of other collabs to work on so he is keeping himself very busy indeed!

M.V.E

Our man from the Netherlands has brought us a brilliant drum & bass track for Singles Volume 3 called “How Does It Feel?” featuring powerful vocals and a high energy summer vibe to it. Hoping to hear more like this from the Dutch whiz!

The little kid genius has been mainly focusing on the DJ’ing side of things but saying that, he has conjured up a dubstep song, Come On, that has been released on Singles Volume 3. You can catch his debut AirPlus Radio show featuring an epic mix of dubstep songs past and present:

Traditionally, Friday the 13th has been notoriously unlucky for all superstitious folk around. However, AirPlus Recordings throws all that superstition out the window and we’re proud to present to you a very special EP from JIKES. 

His much anticipated EP, ”Come Fly With Me“, has been described by the artist himself as an incite in to his psyche. In this he has skilfully worked a combination of liquid and minimal drum & bass, drumstep and chillstep into it. In a brief interview JIKES also told us that his major influences are London Elektricity, Maduk, Rameses B and Metrik.
